Organic / Inorganic Project

Image
Organic  Inorganic The first assignment of my junior year Illustration Narrative class was to take two words that end in "-ism," and create a visual representation of them through objects. One object must be organic, and the other inorganic. For organic, I used apples to represent "racism;" while silverware was used to embody "Judaism." First, I drew each work with pencil. After that, I used my fingers to add shading/value. Then I outlined everything in Sharpie. Next, I scanned each drawing and sent it to my laptop. After I received it via email, I downloaded it into Photoshop and colored it there. In addition to coloring everything, I added shadows and emphasis on light.

College Newspaper Comics

Image
I have worked for "The Review" at the University of Delaware since my Sophomore Year. My job is to rotate with people on creating comics every month. These are the first five I have made so far. There will be more to come next semester.

Character Drawings

Image
The Simpsons Family Guy Rick and Morty Looney Tunes The Muppets SpongeBob SquarePants Disney These are my proudest works to date. They originally started out as a "find-it" type of work. Eventually, I just decided to group all the characters around their rightful counterparts. I would like to continue making these in the future. These are all outlined in Sharpie, and colored in colored-pencil. These are so important to me, I insisted on getting them all laminated.

Political/Pop Culture Cartoons

Image
Who's On First? Breaking Bugs Insult to Injury Childish Politicians In addition to making "Packed Pictures," I also like to make standalone cartoons. Some are based on politics; other are based on pop culture. Every cartoon has a punchline. Unfortunately, some cartoons are dated, and one would need to have background knowledge on the characters, setting, and situation to understand the joke. For example, I created "Childish Politicians" immediately after watching the 2nd Presidential Debate for the 2016 Election. During the debate, Hilary Clinton called Donald Trump a puppet. In response, Trump immaturely yelled "NO, YOU'RE A PUPPET!" I thought that comment was so ridiculous that I decided to draw actual puppets (Ernie and Bert) watching this scene, and weighing in on the situation. To separate/categorize these from my other cartoon pieces, I leave these in black and white.

Elephant

Image
Elephant I copied this scene from a nature-themed calendar; and completed it in colored pencil.

Gorilla

Image
Gorilla This is one of my proudest non-cartoon works. The gorilla was created out of "Prismacolor" brand colored pencils and charcoal.

"Gatsby Looking Towards the Green Light"

Image
"Gatsby Looking Towards the Green Light" I have always wanted to recreate a scene from the "Great American Novel;" and The Great Gatsby  was my favorite book in high school. This piece was made out of oil paint. A while after it was completed, I edited it a bit in Photoshop to give the buildings right angles, make the green light brighter yet fuzzier, etc.

SpongeBob Color-Wheel

Image
SpongeBob Color-Wheel I made this back in high school. The assignment was to make a color wheel with a theme of our choosing. As a cartoonist, it came to me naturally that I use a character as iconic as SpongeBob Squarepants.

Andy Warhol-esque Heisenberg Painting

Image
Andy Warhol-esque Heisenberg Painting Like Andy Warhol, I primarily create art centering around pop culture. As a big "Breaking Bad" fan, I think this perfectly displays my interest in both pop culture and art.

Complimentary Color Character Painting

Image
Complimentary Color Character Painting I made this for Core Painting during my Freshman year. The assignment was to create a complimentary color painting consisting of anything we want. I immediately recognized this as yet another opportunity to use fictional characters in my work. The most frequently used set of complimentary colors in characters that I was able to think of were red and green.

"Sideview Penny" Print

Image
Coin Print I made this for Printmaking during my Sophomore year. The objective was to carve a design into a copper plate. We would then ink the plate, and run it (along with a piece of paper) through a printing press. The image here is what I was left with. Because pennies are copper, and we had to come up with an original design, I thought it would be interesting to recreate the penny with a different view of Abraham Lincoln's head.

Yearning for the Past Video

This was the first video I made for my Moving Images class during my junior year. The assignment was to show a side of ourselves that no one knows about. For me, that is my nostalgic side. We also had to record all of our audio separately from video. I tried to add comedic elements (deadpan humor) to the project as well. All the archive footage is from the "Internet Archive;" and the video was edited in Adobe Premiere Pro.

Animation of 3-D Man meeting 2-D Man

This was my final project for my 3-D Modeling class during my sophomore year. In this video, I incorporated both 2-D and 3-D animation. Although this was the last project of the semester, it is one of my first projects to contain animation. The 3-D man was made in "Rhinoceros 3D," and the 2-D man was made in "Adobe Illustrator." I then placed both files into "Adobe Animator." The plot consists of a 3-D man encountering a 2-D version of himself. As a result of this, they both freak out.

Punching-Bag Room Animation

Here is another video that I made in my 3-D Modeling class. This video is another early experience of mine with animation. The man punching the punching bag is a GIF that I brought into Photoshop. After saving it, I brought it into "Rhinoceros 3D," where everything else in the room was animated.

Remote Control Animation

Here is yet another early animation test from my 3-D Modeling class. Like the previous project, I used the "Rhinoceros 3D" software, as well as GIFS, to put this together. The plot consists of a remote control pushing its own buttons to change the channel. Each channel/show is made up of the previously mentioned GIFS.

Figure Drawing

Image
Figure Drawing This was an in-class sketch from Core Drawing freshman year. My professor considering this as "figure drawing." Although this was done in the time span of one class period (less than three hours), I think it still shows my ability to create shadows, shades, and shapes.

Still Life Painting 2

Image
Still Life Painting 2 This still-life was my final project for Core Painting freshman year. The subjects are a traffic cone, pottery, ceramic pieces, and cloth.

Still-Life Painting

Image
Still-Life Painting I made this other still-life painting in Core Painting as well. The subjects are a wooden horse, a dress shirt, flowers, and cloth.

Oranges Still-Life Sketch

Image
Oranges Still-Life Sketch This is a still-life drawing of oranges that I made for Core Drawing freshman year. The light source came from nothing other than a desk lamp. I had all other lights off when this was made.

"Nostalgic" poster Advertisement

Image
"Nostalgic" Poster Advertisement This was my final project for Core Typography during my sophomore year. The objective was to create a menu, and there had to be one word in particular that represents everything on it. The word must literally be made out of material that represents it. Moreover, the word must have a lowercase "i" or "j" in it, because the tittle on the "i" or "j" is what the menu items will revolve around. Finally, there must also be a slogan and eight menu items that complement the emphasized word. I made the word "nostalgic" out of toothpaste, because (with the help of my DSLR Canon camera and  the proper lighting) it looks like the neon signs of the 1950's. For me, this is the most important and eye-catching aspect of the project. For my slogan, I created an alliteration ("Family Friendly '50s Environment"), and stereotypical dishes that are served at '50s diners (ex: hamburg

Pen-and-Ink Skeleton and Remote

Image
Pen-and-Ink Skeleton and Remote My favorite assignment from Core Drawing freshman year was this ink-and-pen piece. The original assignment was to take a box, and design the interior with a theme of our choosing. I chose relaxing and watching television. The closest source to artificial body parts I was able to find was plastic bones during the Halloween season. As a result, I painted the edges of the box's interior black (to resemble a TV) and positioned the bones and my remote to make it seem like a skeleton was watching television. After this was completed, our next task was to paint the scene from a certain perspective. I chose to re-create the scene from a bird's eye view.

Torn Tissue Paper Project

Image
Torn Tissue Paper Project Here is my final project from Core Design freshman year. The assignment consisted of torn tissue paper and was divided into three parts. Part One (top left) consisted of 42 small original designs. Part Two (bottom left) is made up of an image taken from a magazine, and a recreation of that image made out of torn tissue paper. The recreation is directly to the right of the the original. Part Three (right) is another torn paper piece; except we were allowed to make anything we wanted. I chose to re-create the time-traveling DeLorean from "Back to the Future."
